Opting Out
It is possible to 'Opt-out' of the Local Government Pension Scheme at any time, however your decision should not be made without looking at the alternative option (the 50/50 section), or considering the consequences. If you do 'Opt-out' you will not be entitled to: -
- A lump sum payment to your estate or nominated beneficiary of three years' pay if you die in service
- Enhanced ill-health benefits for you and your surviving / dependent people
- A pension and optional tax-free lump sum from age 55 onwards, if you are made redundant or retire in the interests of business efficiency
- The benefit of your employer pension scheme contributions which are typically more than twice the amount you pay!
If you were a member who opted-out of the scheme before 01/04/2014, you cannot claim or apply for early payment of your pension until you have left the employment.
